“The drum is the most accessible musical instrument, bar none.  No other instrument gets people as immediately involved in a successful music making experience as the drum.  Through the drum all kinds of goals can be addressed, be they physical, cognitive or emotional”. R. L. Friedman 2000.
Recreational drumming is gradually becoming more mainstream in the UK.  It has been featured in the Guardian newspaper, demonstrated on Dragon’s Den and within the North East has been publicised by Positive Beats.

I am interested in why it is becoming so popular and why it is said to be the next ropes course for team building, or the next big activity for health and well being.  Within Singapore the government had funded the Silver Arts Project which includes drum circles to encourage the growing senior population to come out of their homes, and connect and engage in some light exercise.  In Australia there is a national programme using drumming with adolescents at risk of substance misuse and in America drumming is regularly used in a variety of settings, from the penal system to assisting patients with Alzheimers.

I am able to talk about some of the reasons this phenomena is happening and  can provide further examples, as well as an opportunity for journalists or reporters to experience recreational drumming for themselves.
